Jan 6, 2016

A HUGE thank you to Adam from EHAP - Everyone Has a Podcast for designing our new cover art! Little Man has never looked classier! We forgot to mention this in the episode, but we'll make up for it in the next one!

New year, new you? Or new year, new you ... until mid-February? We take a look at the history of setting New Year's Resolutions, most popular goals, why they don't work and how to make them stick. We also celebrate the new year with a new and improved theme song!

This episode's wine: Blanc de Bleu sparkling Chardonnay with blueberry

This episode's cheese: Aged sharp white cheddar

We turn 21 in this episode! Our podcast is finally old enough to drink, we guess!

Aside from getting so excited over blue bubbly, we're stoked to be back! And we dive right in with our episode celebrating the promises we make (and break) to ourselves every year!

Congratulations to our listener Hilary who won our "Tasting Wine & Cheese" giveaway!

Emily lists the top New Year's Resolutions and breaks them down by gender, geography, and generation. She also takes this time to vent her frustrations at stereotypical young millennials, and lists the most broken resolutions and why they don't work.

By the way, our drinking game for this episode is the phrase "YOLO" because we say it quite frequently, but always with a deep hatred for it. If you'd like some better words, check out our episode, Cheers to Words and Phrases!

Why do we make resolutions? Clearly to torture ourselves! James gives us the actual history behind the tradition and gets into the science behind why resolutions are broken so often.

We also come up with James' new pick-up line: giving a woman his numbers, as well as a pie. Look for him on Tinder -- he'll be the one with a picture of a pie.

Why did Emily read the Wikipedia article about Star Wars: The Force Awakens before going to see the movie? She'll justify it -- go ahead and send us your gripes!

She also gives a quick tip for saving some money over the year. And we get into another discussion about vaping (Check out our Cheers to Vaping episode!)

James gives us some tips and tricks for accomplishing your goals. Emily's advice is if you don't try, you won't fail! And, you people on Facebook, you know who you are, posting about your gym experience right now -- talk to us in March!

See the marshmallow test he talks about in our show notes!

And, James tells us why "Bridget Jones's Diary" is a better movie than he expected. And now the world knows!

Emily talks about the trend of picking a word or a few words to focus on for the year instead of making a resolution. You can find out more information about this idea by listening to episode 31 of The Productive Woman podcast.

James debunks the myth that it takes 21 days for something to become a habit.

We talk about our resolutions, and we'd love to hear yours! And we give shout-outs to You Must Remember This and the Epic Film Guys, two great podcasts to check out.

And speaking of podcasts, Emily talks about the Twitter hashtag #PodernFamily. Check it out, and find even more great shows to listen to!
